Here we are, the final day of Women’s History Month, and what better finale than the Sisters in the Name of Love: Gladys Knight, Dionne Warwick, and Patti Labelle.
On the surface, “Superwoman” is about a woman who lovingly cooks breakfast and dinner for an unappreciative man who would rather read the paper than talk to his wife. The music video includes closeups of sad-looking women of all colors and creeds to indicate the universality of the concept.
Yet, it’s deeper than that. “Superwoman” is not just about a one-sided relationship; it’s about how women are underrepresented and unappreciated by society. Women’s History Month is one way that we can remember and learn about the women who have contributed so much–but as the song says, “this girl needs more than occasional hugs as a token of love from you to me.” So, as March comes to a close, let us not forget to honor the lives and achievements of all the women in our life, and continue to work toward equality and recognition for all people, every month of the year.
As always, the playlists are below; they’re also good to listen to all year round.
